Meet your teacher

This course has been specially designed by leading willow artist and basketmaker Amanda Rayner. Amanda weaves sculptures, installations, garden furniture and all manner of baskets from her workshop in south Wales. She has over 20 years of teaching experience and is extremely passionate about the healing power of weaving - and passing this ancient art on to the next generation.

Why take up basketmaking?

Basketmaking requires almost no tools, can be done at home in your kitchen or garden and the raw material - willow rods - costs very little. Basket making can be hugely therapeutic. Its rhythmic, repetitive nature is great for relaxing your brain and unwinding from a stressful day. You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride as you watch your weaving build into a beautiful basket. It’s a lovely thing do on your own or with a group of friends. We teach basketry at MYOWN2HANDS.CO because it's something humans have done for almost all our time on earth. It feels very familiar and is wonderfully satisfying to learn.

Who is this course for?

This course is perfect for beginners looking to learn a wide variety of basketry techniques. The shopping basket will take around half a day to make, perfect for a peaceful Sunday.

What do you need?

A bundle of about 140 high-quality willow weaving rods, a soaking bag (your willow will need to be soaked for a couple of hours before you weave it), a wire tie (which is used to tie the rods together and help the basket keep its shape during weaving), a pair of secateurs and an old screwdriver.
